Description

The Remote Sensor Boresight Alignment Error Model introduces pointing errors to any Remote Sensor component. This model simulates misalignment of the sensor boresight due to mechanical tolerances, thermal distortion, or vibration-induced jitter. By adjusting the alignment error, users can evaluate the impact of pointing accuracy on sensor detection and coverage.

Module Implementation

The model applies a pitch-axis rotation to the sensor boresight. The alignment error rotates the boresight direction about the sensor’s local Right axis:

where is the nominal boresight direction (sensor Up axis) and is the effective boresight after misalignment.

Positive alignment error pitches the boresight in the positive pitch direction (toward the sensor’s Forward axis).

Assumptions/Limitations

  • The alignment error is limited to pitch-axis rotation; roll and yaw misalignments are not modeled.
  • The error is static unless explicitly changed during simulation; random jitter requires external scripting.
  • The model applies to all derived remote sensor types including cameras, star trackers, and laser range finders.
